Plant Jumps out of the Ground........

Hi All;
I started my plant (really 8 of them) indoors about three weeks ago.
As soon as it popped, I took it outside and let it come out in the sunlight.
The first two leaves were really good size....about 3 inches in diameter.
The first set of true leaves were starting out, so I dug my pit. once I had
that dug, about 3' square, I started to fill it back in. I layered Dehydrated
cow manure 25 LB bags 1-1-1 and a little dirt..tossed it together, and kept
this process until the top and made a small mound to put my plant into. The root
ball was around 6," and the roots were thick and white. I covered it every
night, and was giving it Miracle Grow and fish fertilizer, diluted in water.
Today when I got home from work it looked like the mound had been disturbed and
the plant was completely out of the ground...this could easily been done by a
varmint. Although the plant itself was not eaten in anyway. The roots looked
like very fine baby roots, about 6 of them around an inch or so long, and
brown. It was starting to rain so I could not dig into the mound to see if the
rest of the root system was there, and it was just ripped off of it. When I
planted it, it seem to me that growth all but stopped. It did very good in the
pot. I just passed it off as the shock of going into the ground. Here is the
question.....did I burn the roots right off my little baby ??? And if so...
should I rethink my pit ???
          Thanks for any help...........
