I don't think the problemis damping off. I do think it is moisture and
temperature like you suggested. I only had the one pumpkin seed whose genetics
I was looking forward to using to get a little bigger pumpkin from the Dills.
I use the damp towel/plastic bag method for beans and peas and a few other
seeds. Other seeds I start in my own starting mix and then transplant to the
garden. I expected the pumpkin seeds to jump out of the paper towel. I don't
know why because I do know about the vagaries of seed germination. In the
meantime, I prepped my pumpkin sites pretty much like the rest of the garden,
except deeper. (Double dig method) I amended with manure, regular and worm
compost, gypsum and Biogro. I also sprayed compost tea, undiluted, on the bare
soil. Then the weed block goes on over the whole area. I have the framework
ready for a make-shift greenhouse for the pumpkins when I do get them planted.
I have one Dill up and two others pushing the soil up in their pots. I was
hoping for at least 6 plants so I could cull more selectively. I was hoping
one of the plants I saved would be the Larue/Bobier. The Dills will be great
for this first timer though. Nancy
