The pumpkin plants were planted May 11 and all the plants had the third true leaf started. The plants were covered by row covers which protect the plants from high winds, bugs, frost, and small hail. The winds were strong after the plants were placed in the patch and I am really glad they were protected by the row covers. My guess is that most of the stems would have snapped since the winds gusted from 30-50 MPH. No rain, just wind. All the plants have survived to this point and all have grown since being planted.
The patch contains eight plants and they with their genetics are as follows: 1) 804 Heyne 06 - 1229 Holland 05 x 843 Heyne 05 -- pumpkin 11.8% heavy 2) 649 Heyne 06 - 1127 Holland 04 x 826.5 Heyne 05 -- pumpkin 16.5% heavy 3) 843 Heyne 05 - 1420.5 LaRue 04 x 1446 Eaton 04 4) 1086 Holland 06 - 869 Calai 00 x 1354 Checkon 04 5) 1006 (uow) Heyne 05 - 1127 Holland 04 x 1446 Eaton 04 6) 1068 Bhaskaran 06 - 648 Bhaskaran 05 x 781.5 Frantz 05 7) 1040 Eaton 06 - 842 Eaton 02 x 805 Pukos 00 8) 1269 Marsh 06 - 1173 Macari 04 x 1407 Wolf 05Per usual, my goal is to set another personal best and hopefully, grow a pumpkin at least one pound greater than Dave Bhaskaran this year. (grin)
