Hi Blair,

I would leave the shell casing intact but I don't know if it is different
for giant pumpkins. I have experienced the same thing with my gourds. When
I removed the casing, the leaves broke. The shell will eventually dry out
and can be removed easier with no damage at a later date. The plant just
looks a little strange for awhile but is better than broken leaves. The
plants continued to grow.
My question to the Giants:
What impact would the broken leaves have on the plants progress?
We are planting this weekend. Wednesday, hubby sprayed the field with Round
Up to eliminate weeds. Hopefully this season we will not be hit with the
Mosaic Virus. XXX fingers crossed XXXX
