I have been in the ground since 4 May, the temps have really not cooperated
this spring. Thhe last 3 or 4 nights have really been great, high 60's and
the difference is amazing. I have 22 plants in an irrigated patch and
several are really looking good and are starting to vine. I have 9 plants
in an unirrigated patch and they are not doing as well. Along with the
cool nights and days we have had little rainfall.
I am located in SE Georgia about 65 miles south of Augusta and 55 Miles
North of Savannah. Uusually our last frost date is March 10, 1st Frost
date is 15 November. I have had watermelons in since March 20th and they
are doing poorly, my sweetcorn has been in since 10 Mar and is in the
tassell stage and putting on ears. I picked squash this am, have snap
beans that will be ready Friday and tomatoes that are within two weeks of
being ripe. I enjoy gardening and really appreciate the long growing
season we have here. I have some "Vidalia" onions that are 2lbs this year,
the biggest I have ever grown. I have finally gotten a timed watering
system installed on my major garden plot, applied a good dose of lime this
fall and have been consistent at fertilizing. This is my first year with
the pumpkins, like all the rest of you I am excited too. Good luck to
everyone.
