Re: Barrel System of Growing

Marv:

Come to FL and you don't need barrels! Our fields are nothing but sand. The
growers have fantastic results with all kinds of cucurbits....they plant in
raised beds and mulch with plastic. two rows of granular fertilizer is laid
down at the edge of the rows lengthwise, and the plastic covers all.
Irrigation keeps the soil wet and the fertilizer feeds the plant constantly
until harvest. Nothing magical here, just doing what it takes to grow in sand.

Tim Canniff has several plants growing in these conditions....Tim, care to
jump in on this one?

My field is a bit different, because it is not part of a commercial farm. It
was a field of grass and weeds before we turned it over and planted. Nutrients
and silt from the bordering drainage canals was pumped over the field, making
it rich. Even so, the field soil is nothing but sand. So far, so good.

I think the plants adapt to their soil and conditions. If I had my way, I'd be
growing these plants in a cow pasture on the NY/VT border. Since that's
impossible right now, I am delighted to have this field of sand, uh,
er......dreams!
