Greetings to all from Port Alberni on beautiful Vancouver Island, B.C.
Just a quick update on what's happening here on the west coast of Canada.
The weather has been absolutely gorgeous for the past three weeks. The
garden has been tilled about six times and the soil is warm to the
touch. We're at least two weeks ahead of other years for garden preparation.
On the pumpkin front, I started four seeds in four inch peat pots and
placed them in a "propogating" box at a temperature of 75 - 83 degrees.
D.Geerts 741.5 broke soil after 54 hrs.
Richart 714 broke soil after 66 hrs.
In a dead heat, Richart 871 and S.LaRue 1016 broke soil after 82 hrs.
Three of the four will be going in the garden this week and need to find a
home for the fourth plant. There is definately some interesting cross
pollination potential with this bunch.
Port Alberni is known as the "salmon capital of the world." Perhaps this
year we can add "pumpkin capital" to that.
