The key to your question lies in the term "well-rotted". Most growers would
kill to have a good source of composted manure.
You would not want to use fresh manure, as this would burn the plants.
One recent post suggested working the composted manure in a large area around
the plant site, not just in a smaller mound. The rationale was to make the
roots develop in search of food, not just remain in the prepared area beneath
the seedling. Several experienced growers have reported roots going 6 ft down
and eight feet beyond the surface vegetation. Something to keep in mind when
you cultivate later on.
