Re: New England Mud

Dear P.F. et al,

About two days before the rains came, I tilled my patch, fertilized and
constructed my mound ala George Brooks' compost feeding method. I dug a 1ft
hole in the mound's center and put down a soil heating cable, which I
covered with 4in of commercial mix. I then covered the hole with an old
storm window, and plugged in the cord. 10 days ago, not expecting so long a
period of rain, I started ten seeds on paper towel/plate/heating pad. When
they began to germinate, it was pouring and all I had to do was go outside
with an umbrella, lift the window, and plant each germinated seed an inch
below the relatively dry soil. With the sun out today, I checked and there
are already six seedlings breaking the ground.

The rain caused other problems, though. My bellflowers did not benefit
from the long overcast period. It seems as if they, and several other
veggie/flower crops became tender with no sun, and I have observed them
drooping horribly with all the sun today coming at them at once.

                                                                 Ernest
