I suggest you replace the word "dud" with the word "challenge".
If it was as easy as "drop a seed on the ground, grind it in with the heel
of your shoe, water when you have the time and soon a half ton pumpkin will
appear" then the fun/challenge/frustration/joy etc of this sport would have
far less appeal.
As someone else expressed, the 6 month anticipation of starting a world
record seed far outweighs any downside of not getting it to grow NOW!
