Bart, Duncan,

Thanks for your suggestions.  My sensor guy said he'll look at a
soil-temperature sensor.. if we correlate that with the watering output we
could measure thermal transport.  Some chance I can swing a pumpkin size
sensor too... it would work by  measuring circumference using a toothed
strip and a ratchet counter.  I suspect it would be much easier than
growing the puppy on a scale.
