Direct Start Update 5/1/99


From North Tewksbury, MA approximately 25 miles Northwest of Boston in the 
Merrimack River Valley.

(**)  Indicates new info since last update. 

** A cool Spring so far.  Very dry, April was our driest on record .9".  
Lowest April temp since planting 28 highest 68 average low 34 high 61.  
Last year precipitation 1.9".  Lowest April temp since planting 25 highest 80 
average low 35 high 60.


Mound #1

Eight AG-602-98-GB Seeds:  

Parentage: Mother AG-480-97-GB Farther AG-1006-96-BG

** 7 out of 8 seeds germinated.  Broke ground in 5-7 days.  Today the largest 
has 2 True leaves with the largest leaf being 6.5".

Mound #2

One AG-935-97-GL Seed: 

** Did not germinate.

Seven AG-560-98-GB Seeds:

This is the seed from the "Living Dead" (1006 x 1006) "Son Of The Living 
Dead"..

** 6 out of 7 seeds germinated.  Broke ground in 4-7 days.  Today the largest 
has 4 True leaves with the largest leaf being 8".  One plant is outpacing all 
others.

** Back Up One AG-917.2-97-JG Seed: (Goetze).  Planted 4/20 broke ground in 5 
days.  Just starting to put out true leaves.


** Compost preparation: Built 2 Compost Piles one on each side of the Pumpkin 
Mound.  Started by deep forking in Bradfield +, Cat Chow & Lime in the hole.  
Then added 1 grain bag of  1 year old composted Cow Manure.  On top of that I 
put a heavy sprinkling of Bradfield +, & watered in 1 gal Nitron then put 
another bag of 1 year old composted Cow Manure.  Then repeated the Bradfield 
+ & Nitron.  Topped off with 1/2" layer of soil then mulched with slightly 
rooted hay.
