Did you skin the bear?  You should at least get some good out of him.  Burying
large animals under the pumpkins may help, but it takes some time for
decomposition.  I grew a 636 and 581.5 ontop of some buried hogs.  Good luck.

p.s.  it isn't hard to tan furs, I have done several and had great results.
