Tony need more of a description.  Wire worms are orange tan  look segmented and
it sure could be them.   Or you have some larva maggot perhaps the ole cucumber
beetle which attack young squash roots they are whitish and about a 1/4 inch
long.  I make a drench with pyrethrin/retenone but I am sure there is other
stuff on the market.  Let us know more......sounds like no fun......good
