RE: EARWIGS & HOW TO CATCH THEM

Hi to all list members who may be having problems with earwigs.

An old friend of mine here in the UK, who grows Dahlias and Chrysanthemums
for showing, uses a very efficient method for catching and destroying
Earwigs.
METHOD 1
Here's how to do it. Pack a 6 inch clay or plastic plant pot with straw or
hay and place it upside down 2 feet from the ground on a garden cane or
wooden stick. Push the inverted pot over the cane or stick so that the top
of
the cane or stick is inside the pot.

The earwigs will hide in the straw or hay filled pot overnight. The next
morning check the pot for earwigs and if they are in there BURN the straw or
hay along with the earwigs you have caught. Renew the straw or hay and re
lay
the trap.

METHOD 2
Roll some corrugated cardboard around a cane or stick and place so that the
bottom edge of the rolled cardboard is around 2 feet from the ground. The
earwigs will crawl up the cane or stick and go into the corrugations in the
cardboard. Dispense with as in method 1.

The above methods are tried and tested by many growers here in the UK and
are
better than spraying chemicals around.

If anyone tries the above methods for catching and destroying earwigs please
let me, and other list members, know of your success or failure at catching
them.

Hello Mike T.-I have not heard of those methods but knowing the earwig
habits I expect them to work just fine.I will give it a try and see what I
can catch.--Al Eaton
