WARNING: Although this an old and safe trick, used for many years
in our family, first ask your doctor.
This is the trick I has been using for many years for my delicious pumpkin
candies:
(Please use gloves) Dissolve one teaspoon of HYDRATED lime (calcium hydroxide)
in a gallon of water. Submerge the pumpkin strips in this liquid during some
four hours, and then wash off the strips CAREFULLY, very carefully and
completely.
Now you can put the strips in sugar syrup. The calcium hydroxide harden the
surface
of the pumpkin strips.
