Oregon Update/ Wrap Up

Well 2000 is pretty much over now save for the one last pumpkin I have going
on my #620 Black plant. It was pollinated on October 2nd and it is around
200 pounds or so. Kinda cool. Anyway, there was a definate whirlwind of
activity this last summer, with getting engaged, busy work schedule, the cash
crop, and the competition patch, it is a wonder I even survived. Lisa helped
out a bunch this summer and the two plants she tended to on did very well for
her. My goal of 2000 pounds combined squash/ pumpkin weight fell a little
short, 136.5 pounds short, but I'll take what I got with a smile. Any time
you can claim to be the dual state record holder and have a certain guy named
Mombert living in your state, you must be good or lucky, and I know I am not
all that good yet. Anyway, here is a rundown of our fruit from P2K....

#986 DQ Squash - Went down in early September to a rot spot underneath. Was
a 900 Lyons 94 crossed with my other 900 Lyons 94.
#968 Pumpkin - New Oregon Record Pumpkin - An 800 Edwards squash crossed with
the 815 ANderson.
#895.5 Squash - New Oregon Record Squash - another 900(1) x 900 (2) cross
#826.5 pumpkin - a 935 Lloyd x 946 Geerts cross
#807.5 pumpkin - Lisa's biggie, an 815 Anderson x 800 Edwards Sq
#698 pumpkin - 801 Stelts x the other 801 Stelts plant.
#673.5 pumpkin - 879 Holland x 946 Geerts
#617 pumpkin - 968 Sproule x 1010 Mackenzie
#601 pumpkin - 697 Ciliberto x 946 Geerts

I was really happy with the crosses this year, and interestingly enough, I
fertilizer the patch only once this summer, the soil did all the rest of the
work. It kind of confirms that theory about soil prep being the key to
success. Of course a lot of luck helps too, and good seeds don't hurt, nor
does a lot of hard work.
I haven't gotten all my seeds dry yet, but I am up an running as the seed
trade season is upon us.

Take Care, and hey, lets break 1200 in 2001,
Brett The Pumpkinguru Hester
