RE: Local pumpkins
Half Moon Bay is an independent weighoff site, meaning it is not affiliated
with any of the international pumpkin growing organizations such as the WPC,
or GPC or the IPA, or is that IPC? Anyway what that means is they hold a
weighoff independant of thos organizations that sanction weighoffs in other
locations. Those pumpkins weighed there are official pumpkins. Different
growers organizations and weighoff sites have their own standards for what
qualifies as an official pumpkin. What most of them have in common is that
the fruit must be sound and primarily orange to be called an official
pumpkin, and they are weighed on certified scales. My local feed store has
a contest that does not have these requirements. Therefore the 506 lb.
pumpkin I took there would be considered uow or unofficial weight. I hope
that helps clear things up a little for you. I can't help with information
on organizing a growers group and obtaining an official weighoff site as I
have never been involved in that. Others on the list would be far better
qualified to help you with that.
