Squash <-----> Pumpkin

Hi all,
 
At the risk of asking a stupid question :
 
WHAT  IS  A  SQUASH ? ?
 
Because my native language is Dutch, I tried to look it up
in an English-Dutch dictionary, but didn't get any translation
which had anything to do with fruit or pumpkins.....
 
Can someone explain me the the difference between the regular
(Atl. Giant) pumpkin and a squash ??
