The net you mentioned was discussed at Half Moon Bay in 99. I believe Lincoln 
Mettler, a PNW grower had devised this grid to be placed over a pumpkin in 
question. I think the squares were then counted and the higher ratio of 
mostly green squares to mostly orange would be squash. Perhaps someone from 
the PNW where this grid may have been used could chime in. Is it still being 
used, and if so, how is it working out?

Sometimes, colors are difficult to call. You might have a pumpkin that is 
heavily cantelouped with green, mottled undertones and  orange or blush 
pinkish color to cream color skin as overtones. You have to go with your gut 
feelings on the tough calls. Whatever rules you go by, make sure your growers 
understand them before they weigh off.
