Hi Mike..you'll have to check with other local growers on this list for
actual plant dates as each area has its own prime plant date.....but for
halloween the date is likely a bit later than the competition guys who have
to have theirs done in the first week of October. (for October 5th we start
them April 25 or so here on Long Island)
These Giant Squash and pumpkins are edible, although probably not the very
best match for cooking.
Transplant or direct start? Good question. Tastes great or less filling
?....its likely a matter of opinion...and firmly based upon climate. if there
isn't enough time between frosts it looks like transplant is the best. Each
way has its merits...transplanting helps if you have a specific direction for
the plant to grow as you can plant it facing the right way...direct start the
plant and it will go wherever it wants.
As for seeds from squash...I have some from my crosses last year for free
if your interested......send a SASBPE to Glenn Andrews....256 N.Beech
St.......No.
Massapequa,New York..11758. No money necc if you send a SASBPE....many people
have sent me free seeds and I send them free in return. ...GlennA
