Bill:

If I were in a position of being able to write my own rules (independent
weigh off site), I would likely deem a squash by color alone. The fruit would
be mostly gray, green or mottled, with little or no salmon, orange or blush
color on it. I would judge only the part of the fruit I can see, that is, the
bottom (ground area) of the fruit wouldn't count.

However, since I don't write the rules, I stick with GPC rules as we know
them and use that as my guide.

Clear as mud? That's what judges do, they use a set of guidelines to make
decisions.

Truthfully, Bill, if I were in your spot, I would use GPC rulings on squash,
make your own determination, be a bit lenient on questionable fruit to keep
the local grower morale up and call the shots as you see them. Keep the
playing field level for all and be consistent. That's the best you can do. No
one is likely to challenge you. If they do, so what? They can't take away
your birthday. There's always next year.

Barb
PS...There is no hard and fast rule on judging squash. It takes experience.
