Re: Mint Compost
Hi, all.
Want a clarification on mint compost. Is this a by product of manufacturing,
or is this simply municipal compost with mint scent added to it? Where does
one get mint compost?
The reason I ask is that we just brought home a load of compost from Seminole
County compost area and it smells minty. The man on the front end loader said
they add the scent to cover the smell of the yard waste during the
decomposition process. There is no barnyard smell, just mint.
I believe him, as we got some last year that had a terribly foul odor to it.
It was hot to the touch, and so we left it on the trailer to smoulder for
three weeks. The county official said they often add organic matter in the
form of pig manure and such to keep the piles cooking. Mint scent keeps the
smell down. Piles of compost at that facility are about three stories high.
Is this an acceptable compost to use? I have my doubts now, as I fear I'm
getting a product that has not finished breaking down. The compost we get from
the Orange County facility is odorless, but full of plastic bag fragments. It
was my understanding that compost should be odorless and black or dark brown
in color. I don't mind the bag fragments, if the compost is "done".
