Heh, I did the same thing this year; driving
around the neighborhood at night collecting bags of what I assume to be
leaves. Many of my neighbors are using clear trash bags this year, making
it a little easier to know what I'm getting.
In response to the original question, I have both a
blower/vac/shredder and a 6 HP chipper/shredder. The blower/vac, like you
said, has too small a bag and you have to carry it. My 6 HP chipper not
only does a better job, but shreds them finer than the blower, I'd guess about 1
bag out of 2-3 bags from the blower/vac. One "problem" with the chipper is
that it creates A LOT of dust, which I am sure does not please the
neighbors. It is faster than my blower/vac, but still seems slow when
you've got 20 bags worth of leaves to shred. Incidentally the bag holds
about 3x what my blower holds, and the best part is that I'm not carrying
it.
