RE: Cloudy Water in the Gene Pool

Here's a question for you...do seeds ever split into identical twins? Is
this even possible? If it were, would it make a difference? How could one
tell? OK, so that was several questions. I am just wondering if this might
explain some of the variance in the amount of seeds one gets from a
'Typical' AG fruit. I would think there would be some semblance of
regularity, but there doesn't seem to be. If it were just the seeds that
got properly pollinated that developed into viable seeds, then why do some
giants not have any, or just 30 or so seeds?

Tom - I believe you've got it. You get the bragging
rights. Even individuals with identical genes show
subtle differences due to environmental factors which
play a role in shaping some characteristics.

Think of pumpkins as being as individually distinct as
people are. I come from a family of ten kids and not
one of them look like they came from the same family.

Maybe if someone would self an AG for four or five
generations they could get some of the variability out
of the gene mix. Then AG's from these selfed seeds
would show more uniform characteristics.
