I doubt if anybody on this list has this link but I'll post it below. It's
from scientific tests done way back in 1920's. See the Squash chapter, as it
may apply more than the Pumpkin chapter. It has some great pics/drawings.
Since I can't give you a simple answer, I hope this helps somebody or
everybody. I originally got the link from a tomato forum, but shortened the
link from 71 characters down to 23 using TinyURL. Either click or copy/paste
depending on how you receive this message. It was interesting enough that I
spent a whole afternoon reading all the chapters.

Hello To All, I'm a newbie here and have never grown a pumpkin, I received
some alantic giant seeds, I'm going to give this a try in the spring, My
question is, I want to plant these in our garden, but most of the garden is
on top of our weeping bed, How far down do pumpkin roots go? are they more
surface or do they go deep? just wondering if i should pick a different
spot? also do I really need to start these indoors early or can I just plant
outside when the time is right ? Any
help would be great. Thank-you Lynda
