Poem 2
My second entry for the contest:
MINE
Some people have them on their pant knees
Others hand sewn to a jacket
An addiction has them hidden under sleeves
And some in a computer won't let you hack it.
But I've got mine out in the open
Where it weathers all sorts of trouble
From a bright eyed grower a hopin'
To a pesky vine that goes double.
I fill mine each fall with all sorts of stuff
gypsum and compost are but two
the tractor does till it with nary a puff
until I add the gift from those that say "moo."
It sprinkles it pours it gets cold at night
so I give mine a blanket of rye
it sprouts it greens what a beautiful sight
now until spring I bid mine goodbye.
As winter grabs hold I practice my starting
I research I plan I trade
I eat meals and snacks to the point I am farting
By spring I'll have it made!
Auctions, raffles and poems I enter
Longing for the season to begin
Will I plant at the ends or in the center
I ponder these things with a grin.
November, December, January gone
February, March the season is near
I fire up the tractor and put the tiller on
And April does pass - germination is here.
Out in mine the seedlings go in
Pruning and burying much to do have I
Five and six lobes covered with pollen
The heat comes from that glow in the sky.
Mine stays raked no weeds in sight
A little bit damp with foliar feeding
The size they gain while warm at night
Mine provides the nutrients they are needing.
The battle was waged the bugs are dying
A systemic was used - mildew prevented
My neighbor brags but I know he is lying
I'm losing sleep I must be demented.
Mine gives me many but one I can take
Left behind they moan for their buddy
Maybe the others I'll race at the lake
Another one done now a winter of study.
This is a year in the life of mine
As it starts all over a season to match
The results are back the soil is fine
I tuck mine in, my wonderful patch.
God Bless,
