Pumpkin growers,
Last fall I found Atlantic Giant pumpkins while Internet surfing. Being a
long time vegetable gardener, I was intrigued. I joined this discussion
group
and asked if anyone had a few seeds. The response was unbelievable! I
sent
off a few SASE and was ready to go. Since I was a vegetable gardener and
not
(yet) a pumpkin growing fanatic, I simply planted a pumpkin seedling as I
do my
melons -- dig a hole abut 18" deep, fill with 1/2 horse manure and 1/2 good
dirt, and mound it up. I just got my pumpkin weighed last week. I think
you
folks would call it a UOW, but it weighed 640 lb. It never got orange but
it
was pretty big. I didn't do that much to/for it except water it with the
soaker
hose when I watered my other garden stuff and give it 3 or 4 feedings with
liquid plant food. Since I was born and raised less than 1 mile from the
Altoona, PA weigh off site and had seen pictures of that contest on the
Internet, I
thought my pumpkin was fairly puny. But I went (without my pumpkin) to a
weigh off in Tennessee where I live and the winner there was only 854.
So thanks much to Bill V. from Canada who provided the seed I used. And
thanks much for all the rest of you, who are probably the friendliest group
of
people I've ever met. Since I got 640 lb without really trying, I'd like
to go
for 1000 lb next year. So if you have any seeds with the genetics to do
that
I'd like to have a few. And if someone can point me to tips for trimming
the
vine so it doesn't totally take over your garden I'd really appreciate that
too. I do like this pumpkin growing stuff, but I'm not about to sacrifice
my
green beans and corn!!
Paul from Tennessee
