Bill,
That's beautiful! God has given you several talents, and I'm glad to see you
use them in His service.
A week ago today, at the Pearl Harbor Survivors monthly lunch meeting, I
spent some time with my friend Jesse Love, our chapter's assistant chaplain.
He told me of the last five years of his wife Victoria's life.
She suffered from dementia. People told him to put her in a care home, but
he did not, choosing instead to care for her himself.
When she got to where she could not eat anything that hadn't been pureed,
people told him to buy Gerber's baby food. Instead he cooked her favorite
dishes and pureed them himself and hand fed her.
When she became incontinent, people recommended those adult-size diapers.
Instead Jesse dressed her every morning in her pre-illness clothes,
including underwear, using sanitary pads as his only concession to the
problem.
This big old black man has so much dignity because he has self-respect, not
to be confused with self-esteem. He earned his self-respect the hard way, by
treating everyone in his world with enormous respect. And by living up to
the name God gave him - Love.
Kathie
