Vince, sincere thanks for the yearly post of top proven seeds. A great
courtesy and service on your part. Vince is an excellent grower with a great
heart and great sportsmanship. He helps me every year with a question about
growing and he's very knowledgable. Thank You.
For growers concerned about obtaining the magic seeds, good luck, they are
difficult to come by.
Those seeds are scientifically proven because they repeat growing large
pumpkins year after year. What happens is one grower, often the grower of
the previous seed tries it and grows one over 1000-1200. Many growers flock
to this grower for their seeds. The BEST seed has yet to be grown. You may
be already holding it. It would be nice for every grower to try at least one
new seed every year. Chances are just by good growing technique and soil
practices you may hold the record in your state, or the world. Larry Checkon
grew it from his seed. Hester, Daletas, Eaton, Rose, Dueck, Papez, Whittier,
Wolf, LaRue, Wykcoff, Mombert, and many others have grown their own seeds
with success. There are countless seeds out there never attempted that hold
the genes for a possible winner. Before you rush to the proven seed in many
cases outdated. Plant one from the previous year that holds potential
genetics. I know I am.
Look, seeds grown on your own ground have the likelihood to adapt to temps,
fungi, toxins, soil make-up, air constituents, etc. Each year they could
adapt to your growing conditions that much more and voila you have a seed
acclimating to personal conditions. I believe strongly in this as a future
trend.
Jack LaRue mentioned some of this to me at the OH patch tour 3 yrs. ago and
I haven't forgot about it. Wykcoff very often grows his own seed and look at
his consistency for very large pumpkins. I believe they have something.
Don "large pumpkin wanna be"
