Soil for pumpkins

In addition to my first questions about growing pumpkins in the heat, I forgot
to ask about my soil.  It's about as distant from sandy as it's possible for
soil to get.  Should I add sand to it, or just go with compost to "lighten" it
up?  Thanks.
