Greetings, all.
After lots of preparation for this annual event, our Halloween in FL was a
complete wash out! Maylasian monsoon rain and tornado watches kept the trick
or treaters inside.
I rose early on Thursday to carve my 6 pumpkins in time for the local
newspaper photographer to "shoot" my jack o'lanterns. Within an hour of his
departure, the rains came, and horrible weather plagued central Florida for 2
straight days. No Halloween Friday night. Foiled. A fate worse than death.
The bright sides of this tragedy are: 1.) we get to eat all of the treats we
bought (we expected over 100 kids) 2.) My pumpkins made the front page of
the paper in color and 3.) I saved the seeds from both biggies to share!
My two largest pumpkins were 90lbs and 75lbs. They were field grown from seed
planted into the garden, and then nothing was added, besides well water until
harvest. No special pollination or pruning. Just lots of manure and clippings
tilled into the soil. The result was many large, symmetrical fruits in the 75
- 200 lb range.
While I know nothing about hybrids, hybrid vigor, or any other technical
plant terms, I can vouch for their color, size and shape. They would grow
lovely carving pumpkins, I'm sure!
So, E-mail me if you're interested in seeds. I'll be happy to oblige your
request.
