Suggest using 2x12 lumber (treated -- if you are not worried about
arsenic leaching into your soil) to construct your beds -- much simpler
and easier to place than railroad ties. Till and condition the soil
beneath the bed first, then construct frame and fill with mixture of
topsoil and manure/compost to your liking. You can make the bed any
size, but be prepared to move LOTS of soil to fill it up if it gets very
large. My beds were 6'x16' and I let my vines trail out 45' onto my
lawn. My largest pumpkin was 356 lbs.
