Re: Phytophthora Root Rot

Charles,

I can understand how you feel. I have been batling Phytophthora for several
seasons.
You usually get an out break in late July or in August some time.Phyto is
brought on by extended periods of wet weather. There are some things you can
do. If you can plant in anouther site I suggest to do it. I have spent over
$500 to try and control this root rot.I have had some success in keeping it
intact. Do not bury your vines. The extra day or so it takes for the vines to
dry is asking for big trouble. If you are concerned about holding the vines
down, use a small shovel of dirt on tap roots every few feet. When root is
anchored, remove soil. There are chemicals that are labled for Phyto.
Alliette and Subdue are listed for control, but they are very costly. This
fall I fumigated my soil with a fumigant Basamid. This is supposed to kill
all weed seeds, root rot fungi and so on. It is listed to kill Phyto spores.
It cost me $350 to fumigate my 12,000 sq ft patch. You may need a license to
use Basamid in your area. If you are interested I can send you some info on
it.
