Brock and Kurt:
You raise some good points.....an orgainized breeding plan would certainly
not be a fast way to get large fruit and it may actually run backwards to
smaller fruit before it makes forward progress. Its also true that it may
take some of the fun out of the sport by having a true to type variety.
However, I still believe, and would certainly wager, that the next major
milestone will be met with a true breeding hybrid variety combined with the
best cultural techniques.
Being able to perfom acurate experiments on cultural techniques is another
major advantage of having a true to type variety around. Right now its
difficult to evaluate techniques in a nearly controlled situation with the
genetics being so variable.
