Grow Lights
Chlorophyll Synthesis uses predominantly the blue and red colors of the
spectrum to convert light to food. Grow lights produce much more of this
light than standard florescent bulbs. Comparison, Cool White which is the
best of the standard florescents, for plants, produces 21% of its light in
the Blue range and 8.6 in the Red range. Most of the light from a regular,
florescent is in the Green, Yellow & Orange range which is used the least by
plants. A Grow Light produces 27.3% of its light in the Blue range and 39.9%
in the Red range. The optimum for vegetables is to combine one Standard Grow
Light and one Wide Spectrum in each fixture. This will provide the a good
ratio of the Red to the Far-Red and of the Blue range to maintain normal
plant responses.
Someone commented about the strange color of Grow Lights, this is from the
special Phosphors used to produce the desired light range. As far as cost,
Grow Lights use more expensive Phosphors and are manufactured in much smaller
quantities than standard bulbs making them more costly to manufacture.
