Rick:
I've seen growers till the perimeter of their lawn and allow the vines to
crawl out on the turf. This is sometimes successful, but not optimal.
The earth needs to be turned up and aerated so that vines can get a stronghold
in the dirt. Additionally, common lawn weed and feed preparations, which often
contain atrazine can be toxic to curcurbits and will adversely affect their
growth. Atrazine remains in the soil for a long time, a couple of years or
more. For these reasons, I would not attempt to grow pumpkins on a lawn.
I'd sooner have a smaller, properly prepared plot at the corner of the lawn
dedicated to pumpkins, rather than rely on lawnspace as the main growth
medium. Composted manure is nearly odor free, so that should not concern the
family. Just be sure to pick a spot with full sunshine, that's easily
accessible to your water source. A few landscape timbers can help define the
boundary.
Now is a good time to start plot preparation.
Good luck.
