Scott, Sorry about the spelling. Colchicine is from the fall crocus and
blocks cell wall formation during the process of division. This results in
twice the number of chromosomes as normal. Sometimes it also results in
fruit being twice as big. You are right in your assumptions. We are lucky
we don't work with grasses. Before DNA splicing the grain crop breeders
could only have a new strain every 20 yrs. Better records of phenotypic
displays need to be kept. Its not enough to have the name of the parents.
If your more into the breeding, you could do things that would speed up the
generational count. Self-pollinate 1 pumpkin and cross-pollinate 1pumpkin
on the same plant, grow one indoors just for the genetics. You need to
keep good records and be sure to keep track of which is which out in the
field. I'm in my 5th generation of colchicine treatments on the seeds I'm
working with, I call it the 275Swalley, Heaviest cert. wt. with my name. I
started from an order of catalog seeds 15 yrs ago. My climateis too hot
but next year I might have a cure for that. Have fun, Roger
