Mike ,
Mike S gave a good laymans answer!! and here is another laymans example.
When you eat corn you are eating a 50/50 by product then and there no
waiting of the cross pollination you get to taste it. If indian corn is
near by and crosses or a lesser corn taste you get to see right there the
50% color effect or taste in the seed which in this case is the fruit. AG
are more secretive or we haven't detected how to decifer the seed they are
different and have a huge fruit that protects the seeds...............Now
it is in my opinion that we focus too much on the numbers of weight of the
parent seed ....when the variance is there, the variance is always there in
seed.................. and we should focus on the traits you see before you
eyes. Hell i don't know for sure. If you have a 946geerts that the fruit
before your eyes is thin walled do you plant it because its a offspring of
a hot parent. I am not sure but i don't think so??.I think you are better
focusing on the bet of that particular cross. This is part of the culling
process right? Forget the name look at the product. If there are
undesirable traits who cares who your parents are?? Is this particular seed
one that should be culled....... should you look for the potential in a
solid good cross good traits lighter weight 449 marcellus........(who the
hek knows what cause the lower weight, climate,
nutrients,care............but was a good solid fruit. Can you take these
good solid fruit and take them higher with better care.???(ones that have
big ones in there heritage)...................so many questions
