     You are right.  I do that with my smaller pumpkins but it is just not a 
good idea for the giants.  There are stem problems and often they grow in 
very odd shapes.  Plus, nature wanted them growing on there sides so we 
might as well let them.  We have already screwed with nature enough with out 
selective breeding, trimming, soil doctoring, and overall babying of these 
guys so lets give them a break and grow them how they lay (after a little 
adjusting for optimal vine angle that is)  Hey, I know, next year I am 
growing my pumpkin on a waterbed.
