Sand in clay soil

I would like to her more on this topic. Out here in California we have a lot
of clay soil. And they used to make adobe buildings out of it.
At the local nursery they say, "organic amendments only, sand plus our clay
equals cement."
Yet other people, who have clay soil, recommend sand as an amendment.
I wonder if maybe we have different definitions of clay, or if weather
conditions, i.e., back east there is freezing and thawing, out here it just
gets a little colder, but no real freezing - does that make a difference?
All ideas welcome. If it works for you, it must be right. We just have to see
if there are other factors involved. I would like to be able to add sand once
and forget about the other stuff, so tell me who I can make my life easier!
