Most weigh-off sites refer to their "weigh-offs"
as "Pumpkin Weigh-offs".......and since most
dictionaries refer to pumpkins as an orange
fruit......"technically" at these weigh-offs, squash
should be entered and judged as a seperate
classifaction.
The real problem (as Brock pointed out) is that
the percentage of "orange" vs "green" is a
SUBJECTIVE call by the judges.
One solution would be to change the name of
our weigh-offs from "Pumpkin Weigh-offs" to
"Cucurbit Weigh-offs" (similar to what Brett
suggested). By doing this we eliminate the
color problem.......the heaviest "cucurbit"
wins regardless of color.
However, doing this creates 4 new
problems........
One.....The public is not going to flock to
Canby, Half Moon Bay or Byward to see
"them thar cucurbits".
Two......Sponsors will not put up prize money
for "those cuckoo bits......or whatever those
growers call them".
Three....The media (newspapers and TV) will
not be anxious to cover "something new" that
sounds like a "cucumber" but still looks like
a pumpkin.
Four.....The "orange only" lovers will continue
to have "PUMPKIN" Weigh-offs" where
"orange rules".......and this puts us right back
where we started.
The solution......darned if I know.
If a "beautiful orange" PUMPKIN can win
a weigh-off if its shape happened to be
"super ugly", then certainly a SQUASH
should not miss out on the opportunity
just because its color is "green".
