Kevin-
     Great to see a learned biologist interested in the giant pumpkins.  I
have been working with giant pumpkins for several years.  I am now at Carnegie
Mellon University studying Biology (particularly looking to get into molecular
biology and genetics).  I am just a Freshman, but have high hopes. 
Concearning the pumpkins, open pollination refers to when there was not a
controlled cross.  Concearning what makes another seed better, that depends on
a lot of factors, and research.  If you are interested in learning more, let
me know.  Glad to help.
