overwatering pumpkins

Hello,
This is my first year with trying to an AG. I live in the Central Valley of
California, where the summertime temp rarely goes below 95, and we had lots
of days over 100 degrees.
I thought I was helping my pumpkins by keeping the area closest to where the
vine
sprouted in standing water. However, all 3 varieties I planted, Early Sugar,
Prizewinner Hybrid and AG seemed to begin oozing water and every pumpkin
rotted. Can you overwater pumpkins? Any reply would be helpful. Thanks
