Re: Pumpkin Metamorphosis

Rocky, my seeds were Howard Dill's generic 500-700 Lb package stock, so I
don't know the parentage.
Bob, I didn't mention it in my first note, but my green squashkin is also
turning orange, though not nearly at the rate the orange one is turning
green (they are sitting butt-to-butt on the porch, and I thought of
offering up my theory on the "Color Replication of Adjacent Pumpkins", but
I've seen how this List sometimes reacts to theories).

So why, then, if these things change color with age, is color the only
determinant of pumpkin vs. squash at the time of weighoff? A single fruit
obviously isn't both. Is "pumpkin" simply a preferred color variety of
squash? Some discussion on the List earlier this season suggests there is
little (or no) genetic difference between the two.
