Two Favorites
Two of my favorite people have reached new personal milestones this year,
and each of them is a unique member of our pumpkin community. Each has
contributed immensely to our sport. They have sent out bijillions of seeds
to newcomers and oldcomers alike, and each has been an intelligent,
cheerful, and responsible voice on the Mallorn list.
Marv Meisner (aka “Marv in Altoona” and/or Lubadub) created the Altoona
weighoff (which has grown into one of the coolest events in all of
pumpkindom) and continues to be the driving force behind the weighoff. He
also got the PGPGA rolling, an association that has matured into a cohesive
group of good folks who can kick pumpkin butt with the best of them. On the
list, Marv initiates lots of good, serious growing topics for us to noodle
over. This year for the first time, Marv broke the 700 barrier with a
gorgeous 729.2-pound pumpkin.
Shellie Cramer (aka Bota-Babe and/or WebMonstress Supreme) could well be the
single sweetest person any of us has ever known. She was the first person
who ever sent me seeds, and whereas most people send 2 or 3 or 4 seeds at a
time, Shell loaded me up with 20 or 30 at a pop. Shellie spent a lot of
time building one of the most entertaining websites anywhere in the
cyber-universe ( http://www.gophergirl.freeservers.com ) which is perhaps
the single best response to that common question we all face: “What do you
DO with them??” Shellie blasted through two barriers this year – first 700
at Canby with a 729, then she kept right on going with an 824 at Half Moon
Bay!
I want to congratulate these two dedicated pumpkinheads. Nobody is more
deserving of recognition and big milestones than these two quintessential
“nice-guys”!
I'd also like to thank both of them for all their contributions to the
community-at-large, and for all the help each has given me personally.
And Shellie and Marv, just in case you guys thought you were gonna sit back
and relax, now… Forget it! I expect 1,000 pounders from each of you next
year! Marv, start tilling! And Shell, fire up that 'Bota!
