Re: What should I do ??? STEVE

so do I understand you correctly Steve. You say that the Pumpkin is and
Orange Squash. and you say that the Atlantic Pumpkin is NOT Orange and
therefore NOT a Pumpkin. but You seem to want it to be a Pumpkin and the
illusion is upheld by everyone. So you agree to support the illusion that
the Atlantic Pumpkin does NOT fall into the definition of a Pumpkin. But it
is big so therefore you join with all the members of the Pumpkin Growers to
grow a SQUASH and call it a PUMPKIN even though everyone knows it is NOT
TRUE.

Well this is more insane than I thought. but maybe I can trick my mind into
believing what is NOT TRUE. The Madd Hatter told Alice in the Wonderland
that he could believe many things that were NOT true every day. or somethng
along that line. Does this mean we are all Madd Hatters. Is this Alice's
Wonderland. ???

 Uh, whoever you are....

DUH. Pumpkins ARE ALL squash. You didn't know that? Pumpkin is just a term
we use for orange squash. They are all c. maxima (field pumpkins are c. pepo,
but you won't get any over 20 pounds).
We categorize what are "pumpkins" at weighoffs by color, mainly, even though
they are really basically the SAME thing.
Now if you want to grow somehting big that looks more like what you would
call a pumpkin, try Burpee's Prizewinner hybrid. It is a c. maxima that has
been bred for color and shape, and they get to be about 200 pounds or so.
They are very dark orange and excellent shapes. As for Atlantic Giants, it
depends on the genetic history. Stuff from the 935 Lloyd line usually is more
yellowish. Other lines have better genetics for color. There are endless
combinations of genetics out there, you should research on what you are going
for in growing pumpkins, and maybe even try breeding in some of your own by
making your own crosses.
