equation 1.9

Guess the third time is a charm.  I guess I have done something wrong in subscribing.  My question is...In Mr. Don Langevin's ---10teps to a Giant Pumpkin he uses the equation 1.9 to determine the approx. size of his pumpkins.  After doing the three way measurement he takes the total inches and multiplies that figure by 1.9 to get the approx. weight.  I just want to know more about this.  I am a second year grower and need all the information I can get to come up with a "BIG" one.  The pumpkin I am taking to the Elk Grove weigh-off on Sat. Oct 6th looks to go well over 500 pounds  The scale will tell the truth.     Thanks a million.
