Well, this is whats been happening in the 4 years Ive been growing and it happens every year all over again.....growers get dq'd in one state while another state under the same GPC banner has squash being ruled pumpkins. Squash being ruled pumpkins when they are big enough and pumpkins being ruled squash when they are important enough. Even though you may not have been directly involved in a "situation", YOU ARE THE GPC. Correct me if Im wrong, but it is a growers organization no? With a steering committee responsible to get feedback from you, the growers, and then to make changes as needed ? So, in effect, your opinions are important. They may not be the majority, or in the best interests of what the steering committee thinks should be the way to go, but they are the opinions of the growers. If there were no growers then there wouldn't be a GPC either right? So, I respectfully disagree with the pipe down comment. Its gotten to a point where its starting to effect nearly all weighoffs and the growers in one way or another and should be addressed this winter. Opinions are important to see where everyone is at on this topic. I think its great to see the heavy hitters speak up as they have more clout than some 500lber grower who constantly carries on about the lonesome squash. I'm glad to see its not"oh, its just Glenn carrying on about squash again".
I think its the steering committee's responsibility to address the growers concerns on this matter and I think it would be nice for them to include an update on thier discussions over this matter in an open letter format offered to be run in a few of the growers groups newsletters like the NEPGA Newsletter, the Main Vine,OSLGA newsletter etc. I look forward to an open forum-type discussion possibility at the Guelph Seminar in the late winter. The GPC steering committee,as I understand it, is made up of five knowledgeable growers....Tim Parks,Hugh Wiberg,Joel Holland,Al Eaton and Pete Glasier. I know that Tim,Joel,Pete and Al all monitor the pumpkin forums on the internet and I hope they are listening to not just one grower complaining but a large number of prominant growers expressing a concern and offering opinions.( I also know that Al E. wouldn't have a squash within 10 miles of his house so not much help there !). What do you say guys? Will you listen, discuss , and report back? I hope so..........In the meantime, perhaps we can continue to work on this topic til we find an appropriate solution. Constructive discussions certainly belong on this list so to those that don't care, please resist the urge to trash those that do.You know where the delete key is. Thanks.........Glenn Andrews
