Re: IPA Weigh - Off ..... Des Moines, WA

I have talked to her on several occasions and she is amazed that she was able to do what she did. She almost seemed embarrassed to be winning so much. The fact that all of these fruit grew at such an amazing rate and didn't blow up was amazing. She said that she had reduced to only one fruit on each of these plants and there was no backup if something happened.

I talked a lot about the problems I had this year and she mentioned that one thing she did this year was to have a place analyze her soil for fusarium and several other fungus or bacterial problems and she dealt with them as necessary. She gave me the website of a local lab that does the tests and she recommended them. She felt that her plants were much healthier this year as a result. I know that she has worked for many years building up her soil and that she has a beautiful sunny exposure for growing. I saw her place in the Holland video for 2000. It looks like a wonderful place.

One other thing she said she did and that was work, work work on the plants. She didn't have all that success by accident. I am hoping to get some similar seeds for next year to hopefully improve my results. It is interesting that each one was a different seed. The older 879 Holland, the 940 Mombert, the 735 Stelts and I think she told me the 1,111 was from one of her own seeds. I think that her methods were more of a factor than the specific seeds, although she had some excellent choices for seeds.

Any one of her pumpkins would have been a career for any of us, but she had 4 in one year. I will say that she is a very friendly and open person. She will talk to you any time and she truly was excited at each weighoff. I took the photo of her at Canby and she showed how excited she was when she hugged the orange monster.

It’s not enough that she had three 1100+ pound fruit, she broke last year’s record with two of them!  I would love to have a couple hours to discuss her methods with her!

Geneva said that she used the 879 Holland seed for this one.

I am amazed with this season as she won 4 competitions with a 992 at Puyallup, the 1,262 at Canby, the 1.111 the following weekend and now this 1,144. That is an amazing year.
